Una delle notizie che mi ha rattristato di più nelle ultime settimane è stato leggere che il Regno Unito avrebbe intenzione di ritirare la sua adesione al programma di scambio internazionale per gli studenti universitari Erasmus+.
Questa notizia arriva dalla votazione dei deputati britannici che nella seduta dell’ 8 gennaio 2020 hanno votato contro l’emendamento – New Clause 10 con 344 voti contro 254, che avrebbe spinto il Regno Unito a negoziare la sua permanenza nel programma Erasmus+.
Al di là delle posizioni politiche di apertura e chiusura verso il diverso, lo straniero, l’altro da sè, appena ho sentito la notizia mi è subito venuto in mente un grande scrittore: Daniel Pennac.
Avete presente quell’espressione “non sapere a che santo votarsi?”. Ecco quando la vita si fa dura, faccio spesso ricorso ai grandi – letterati, insegnanti, filosofi, allenatori, amici e vicini di casa. Non sono proprio santi ufficiali, ma mi piace sperimentare come ogni individuo sia fonte di profonda saggezza e maestro di vita. In questi scambi tra anime intesso una relazione intima di scambio e di vero e proprio dialogo. O meglio io faccio domande e talvolta ottengo risposte.
Daniel Pennac oltre ad essere uno dei migliori scrittori sulla faccia della terra, penso che sia anche un grande maestro.
L’ho incontrato una volta sola e mi è bastata per lasciarmi un segno indelebile. Ero al Salone del Libro a maggio del 2017, in prima fila.
Il primo gesto silenzioso di Pennac in quella occasione mi aveva colpito molto. Seduto al tavolo dell’incontro toglie il cartellino con il suo nome e scrive quello della sua traduttrice. Chapeau.
E’ lì per presentare il suo ultimo attesissimo libro Il caso Malaussène. Mi hanno mentito, 2017.
Ha due occhietti vispi e pungenti sotto gli occhiali, un sorriso gioioso e sfidante sulle labbra, la chioma dinamica.
Avverto che vorrebbe anche parlare d’altro e lo fa.
Spesso e volentieri fa riferimento al lavoro di uno scrittore, al sacrificio, alla devozione e alla disciplina. E al successo. “Dietro al successo c’è un prezzo da pagare. E questo prezzo è la solitudine”.
Poi mi accorgo che ha lasciato per la fine dell’incontro una parte immensa di sè che fa rima con Cuore e Etica. Racconta della sua esperienza di professore in una scuola rinomata. E ricorda che i suoi studenti sono fortunati rispetto a tutti gli studenti del mondo e poi condivide con noi il suo sogno.
Pennac sogna un’istruzione internazionale per tutti gli studenti, di un programma Erasmus+ implementato a livello europeo a partire dalla scuola dell’infanzia fino all’università. Ci guarda e ci dice: “Immaginate che adulti avremmo se già da bambini scoprissero che a colazione ogni famiglia mangia cibi diversi“.
Proprio in questi giorni Pennac è in tour in Italia per presentare il suo ultimo libro ‘La legge del sognatore’, ispirato alla sua passione per il regista Federico Fellini, di cui quest’anno si celebra il centenario della nascita.
Pennac si è espresso con queste parole: «In Francia ci sono adolescenti immigrati che non si sentono francesi anche se sono cresciuti là e parlano la nostra lingua, e questo accade perché vivono isolati nelle banlieue della periferia, chiusi nelle loro comunità di provenienza, e si sentono quindi emarginati. Se prendessimo gli stessi ragazzi e li mandassimo a fare uno stage di un mese in Germania con altri adolescenti alla fine si sentirebbero anch’essi francesi. Non è così difficile: è una questione di rispetto e di dignità e di non avere paura dell’altro».
Per tornare alla Brexit e all’Eramus+, nulla è ancora definitivo.
A partire dal 2021 infatti il governo inglese negozierà con l’Unione Europea la partecipazione al Programma Erasmus+. Rimane una situazione in via di definizione dove non vi è nulla di certo.
Un elemento confortante è sapere che il programma Erasmus prevede già forme di adesione per quei paesi non appartenenti all’Unione Europea, come ad esempio la Turchia, la Serbia, alla Repubblica di Macedonia e i Paesi dello Spazio economico comune (Norvegia, Islanda e Lichtenstein), che comunque aderiscono in modo completo al Programma.”
Avrete ormai capito perchè mi sono rivolta a Pennac dopo aver appreso la notizia della possibile uscita della Gran Bretagna dal programma Erasmus+.
E magari vorreste anche sapere a questo punto che cosa, di grazia, mi abbia risposto. La verità è che non mi ha detto nulla. Mi ha donato solo un gran sorriso di chi la sa lunga e ha la pazienza di persistere. Era un invito che poteva riassumersi nella parola: “Continua”.

BREXIT,ERASMUS+ AND DANIEL PENNAC: A SAD NEWS FROM UK AND MY DIALOGUE WITH THE “BIG ONES”
One of the news that made me sad during the last weeks is reading that UK wants to withdraw its adhesion to Erasmus +, the International University Students Exchange Program.
This news comes from the British members of Parliament voting session on the 8th of January 2020, when they voted against the amendment- New Clause 10 with 344 votes versus 254, that cause the UK negotiation on its permanence in the Erasmus+ Program.
Beyond the politics positions about the openness and narrowness to the different,the stranger, the other ,when I heard the news I immediately thought about a big writer: Daniel Pennac.
Do you know the expression “ Do you know which saint to turn to?” well, when the life goes hard, I often appeal to the big- writers, teachers, philosophers, coaches, friends and neighbours. They aren’t officially saints, but I like to test how every person is a source of profound wisdom and a life master. In these exchanges between souls I experience an intimate relationship and real dialogue. Or rather, I ask questions and sometimes I get answers.
Daniel Pennac besides being one of the best writers on earth, I think he’s also a great teacher.
I met him only once and it was enough for me to leave an indelible mark. I was at the “Salone del Libro” on May in 2017, in the front row.
Pennac’s first silent gesture on that occasion had impressed me greatly. Sitting at the meeting table, he removes his name tag and writes his translator one. Awesome!
He was there to present his latest highly anticipated book “The Malaussène Case. They Lied to Me”, 2017.
He has two lively and pungent eyes under his glasses, a joyful and challenging smile on his lips, dynamic hair.
I could feel that he would also like to talk about something else and he did it.
He often and willingly refered to a writer’s work, sacrifice, devotion and discipline. And to success. “Behind the success there is a price to pay. And this price is loneliness. “
Then I realized that he has left a huge part of himself at the end of the meeting, going along with Heart and Ethics. He spoke about his professor experience in a renowned school. He recalled that his students are luckier than the world students and then he shared his dream with us.
Pennac’s dream is about an international education for all students, an Erasmus + program implemented at European level starting from kindergarten to University . He looked at us and said: “Imagine what young adults could be if they would discover that for breakfast every family eats different food when they were kids”.
At the moment Pennac is on tour in Italy to present his latest book ‘The dreamer’s law’, inspired by his passion for the director Federico Fellini, whose centenary of the birth is being celebrated this year.
Pennac expressed himself with these words: “In France there are immigrant teenagers who do not feel French even if they grew up there and speak our language, and this happens because they live isolated in the suburbs of the suburbs, closed in their communities, and therefore they feel marginalized. If we took the same boys and sent them for a month-long internship in Germany with other teenagers, they would eventually feel French too. It’s not that difficult: it’s a question of respect and dignity and not being afraid of the other”.
Going back to Brexit and Erasmus+ , nothing is already definitive.
From 2021 UK government will negotiate with the UE about its participation to the Erasmus+ Program. This situation remains to be defined where there is nothing certain.
A comforting element is knowing that the Erasmus Program already provides forms of membership for those countries not belonging to the European Union, such as for example Turkey, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia and the countries of the Common Economic Area (Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein) , who however fully adhere to the Program.
Now you should have understood why I turned to Pennac after hearing the news of the possible exit of Great Britain from the Erasmus+ program.
And maybe you would also like to know what he answered me. The truth is, he didn’t tell me anything. He only gave me a big smile from those who know a lot and have the patience to persist. It was an invitation that could be summed up in the words: “Keep going on”.
